Sony HR-MP5 Multi Processor

A year before releasing the Sony DPS-V77, Sony decided to offer a more affordable multi-effects processor in the HR-MP5, a half rack sized processor. The Sony HR-MP5 is not what one would hope for if looking for a 'Best of Sony' and probably was not intended to be that. Aimed at home recording studios rather than top flight studios, Sony had great success with the HR-MP5.

Details

The Sony HR-MP5 is a compact (half rack) multi-effects processor most suitable for recording studio use. Up to seven effects can be obtained simultaneously. Released as a more affordable way to get the DPS series effects for the smaller studio or home studio enthusiast, the Sony HR-MP5 Multi Processor delivers outstanding effects that are comparable to the DPS series from which it’s effects are derived.

User-friendly operation
The high visibility of the large full-dot display enables speedy and smooth operation by letting you visually check the operating status in real time while operating the dial and shuttle ring.

Rich selection of preset effects
100 different effects created by musicians, mixing engineers and acoustic engineers from all over the world are stored in memory, so the effects you need are always at hand.

Flexible sound creation
When you need effects different from those stored in the preset program, you can use the edit function to create and store in memory up to 100 original effects.

Connectable to MIDI devices
With this unit’s MIDI function, digital control is possible from MIDI components such as keyboards as well as MIDI sequencers and computers equipped with a MIDI interface.

Had the Unit in our studio. Very wide reverb sounds and somewhere between the Sony R7 and V77! So, some sort of secret weapon in a half rack car radio size. Our unit needed some service on the display.

Got mine for dirt cheap, fitted a new Battery holder and did some general minor maintenance. It sounds great and weird if you make it, works great in Techno and Jungle/DnB settings. The presets are rubbish with the exeption of a few though.

Who haven’t seen the video with the Juno60 hooked up to one of these? Made me buy a mint condition Juno60, and a Sony HR-MP5. Actually: 2 of them. Battery holder soldered, LCD backlight replaced, DC-DC fixed, EEPROM flashed with latest firmware, this unit is for eternety. It’s one of those miracle machines that should not be outstanding based on the parameters, but it does something to your brain. Forget the DSP-V77 — this is the stuff dreams are made of.

Good but not great, if you are looking for a cheap DSP series unit, this is not it, save your money and buy a Sony DSP-V77, it is still the best of the bunch.

  1. This is a great-sounding unit. Unfortunately, it’s built like Sony consumer electronics, and not Sony Pro.
The backlight goes dim, the internal battery needs constant replacement, and it needs a hard reset any time that battery goes dead – and you lose your programs.
If you know how to combat these problems, you’ll have a great-sounding unit that’s really flexible.
Just remember – it’s built like shit.
