The Linn 9000, introduced in 1984, was an integrated digital drum machine and MIDI keyboard recorder that combined high-fidelity sampled drums, velocity-sensitive performance pads and a full 32-track, 16-channel MIDI sequencer in one self-contained workstation.
The Linn 9000 provided 18 digitally recorded drum and percussion sounds (8-Bit 11kHz-37kHz) with per-sequence mix and tuning, exacting per-note hi-hat decay, programmable tempos and song construction tools familiar to tape users, including punch-in and out, auto-locate, fast forward, rewind, copy and merge.
Front-panel sliders gave hands-on level control for every drum voice, with pan sliders on the stereo mixer, while individual direct outputs let engineers route each sound to outboard processing. The Linn 9000’s workflow centred on its pressure-sensitive pads for spontaneous dynamics, a clear LCD with alphanumeric keypad, transport controls modelled on a multitrack, and graphic aids such as bar and step displays.
The Linn 9000 synced internally or to external devices via tape sync and clock, added programmable trigger outputs, accepted multiple trigger inputs for pads or audio, and offered cassette storage with an optional 3.5-inch disk drive and user-sampling card. Although early software revisions were temperamental, the Linn 9000 pioneered the pad-driven, all-in-one production approach that shaped late-1980s professional studios and directly foreshadowed the MPC-style workstations that followed.
The Linn 9000’s combination of playable pads, sample-based drums and deep MIDI sequencing became a template for modern beat-making, influencing R&B, pop and hip hop production methods throughout the decade.
