Abbey Road Studios History

Abbey Road Studios was established by the Gramophone Company, later known as EMI, at 3 Abbey Road, St John’s Wood, London. Opened on 12 November 1931, it was the world’s first purpose-built recording studio, designed to accommodate large orchestras and ensembles in its expansive Studio One.

Through the 1930s and 1940s, it became a centre for classical and film recording, hosting the London Symphony Orchestra and numerous renowned conductors. The 1950s saw the studio expand into popular music with artists such as Cliff Richard and The Shadows.

The 1960s transformed Abbey Road Studios’s identity when The Beatles, under producer George Martin and engineers Norman Smith, Geoff Emerick, and Ken Scott, used it as their creative home. The studio’s pioneering use of multitrack tape machines, Automatic Double Tracking (ADT), and innovative signal processing redefined the possibilities of recorded sound.

In the decades that followed, Abbey Road Studios remained at the cutting edge. Pink Floyd recorded The Dark Side of the Moon there in 1973, and later sessions included work by Kate Bush, Radiohead, Oasis, Adele, and countless others. The facility has continued to evolve with state-of-the-art digital mastering suites, Dolby Atmos mixing environments, and one of the most extensive collections of classic analogue gear in the world.
