Sunset Sound History

Sunset Sound began life as part of Walt Disney Productions, originally designed to record film scores and soundtracks for classics such as Mary Poppins and 101 Dalmatians. Founder Tutti Camarata, a former Disney music director and accomplished engineer, recognised the potential of the space for commercial music recording and opened it to the public in 1958. The studio’s blend of precision engineering and natural ambience made it ideal for both orchestral and contemporary sessions.

By the mid-1960s, Sunset Sound had become a creative hub for the emerging rock and pop scenes in Los Angeles. Legendary albums including The Doors’ Strange Days, Janis Joplin’s Pearl, and part of Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin II were recorded there. The studio’s combination of technical precision and relaxed California atmosphere attracted a new generation of artists seeking freedom and sonic experimentation.

In the decades that followed, Sunset Sound continued to evolve without losing its character. The 1970s and 1980s saw sessions from Fleetwood Mac, Prince, Elton John, and Van Halen, each taking advantage of the studio’s iconic rooms and distinctive sound. Today, under the direction of Paul Camarata (Tutti’s son), Sunset Sound remains one of the last great independent studios in Los Angeles, still operating with its original consoles, echo chambers, and equipment carefully preserved.

Sunset Sound Signature Sound / Design

Sunset Sound is known for its exceptional room tone — warm, natural, and incredibly musical. Studio 1, the largest room, features 6-metre ceilings, diffused wood panelling, and a custom isolation booth that gives drums and vocals remarkable presence. Studio 2, slightly smaller and tighter, is favoured for guitars and overdubs, while Studio 3 offers a more modern but equally balanced acoustic character. The studio’s vintage echo chambers, original tube consoles, and hand-wired signal paths give recordings a distinct richness and spatial depth. The rooms are also celebrated for their ability to “glue” a mix together organically, without excessive processing.
