Born in 1943 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Bernie Grundman began his career as a recording engineer before finding his true calling in mastering. After studying electronics and acoustics, he joined Contemporary Records in the 1960s, where he honed his understanding of vinyl cutting and sonic precision. His work quickly gained attention for its clarity and musical balance.
In 1972 he joined A&M Records in Hollywood, where he became chief mastering engineer. During his time at A&M, he mastered a wide range of landmark albums, including Steely Dan’s Aja, Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall and Thriller, and Prince’s Purple Rain. His ear for musical dynamics and tonal integrity helped shape the sound of contemporary pop, rock, and jazz through the 1970s and 1980s.
In 1984 Grundman founded Bernie Grundman Mastering, a purpose-built facility in Hollywood that quickly became one of the most in-demand mastering houses in the world. Designed for acoustic neutrality and equipped with custom-built electronics, the studio allowed him to refine his craft to the highest possible level. Since then, Bernie Grundman and his team have worked on countless albums across every genre, including releases by Herbie Hancock, Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar, and Adele.
