Patrick Leonard is an acclaimed American producer, songwriter, and keyboardist whose work helped shape the sound of sophisticated pop and rock from the 1980s onward. Best known for his creative partnership with Madonna, Leonard co-wrote and produced many of her defining hits including Live to Tell, Like a Prayer, and Cherish. His productions are noted for their lush harmonic structures, emotional depth, and cinematic arrangements. Beyond pop, Leonard has worked with artists such as Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Elton John, and Michael Jackson, balancing commercial success with musical complexity.
Born in Chicago in 1956, Patrick Leonard began his career as a touring keyboardist, performing with Frank Zappa and The Allman Brothers Band before transitioning to studio work. In the early 1980s, he became musical director for Madonna’s The Virgin Tour and subsequently one of her primary collaborators. Together they crafted a sequence of era-defining albums, True Blue (1986), Who’s That Girl (1987), Like a Prayer (1989), and I’m Breathless (1990), establishing Leonard as one of pop’s most sophisticated architects.
Leonard’s musical training and jazz background gave his productions a harmonic richness uncommon in mainstream pop. He layered synthesizers with acoustic textures, using both digital and analogue instruments to create depth and emotional resonance. After his work with Madonna, Leonard expanded into rock, producing Roger Waters’ Amused to Death (1992) and co-writing with Pink Floyd on A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987). He later collaborated with Elton John, Bryan Ferry, and Leonard Cohen, further demonstrating his range as a writer and producer.
In 1990, Patrick Leonard launched Toy Matinee, a short-lived but critically acclaimed studio project created in collaboration with singer-bassist Kevin Gilbert. The self-titled album blended Leonard’s sophisticated harmonic sense with Gilbert’s lyrical wit and progressive pop sensibility, resulting in a sound that fused art-rock ambition with polished, radio-ready production.
Recorded at Johnny Yuma Recording in Los Angeles, Toy Matinee showcased Leonard’s skill as a composer, arranger, and producer, featuring rich analogue synthesisers, layered guitars, and pristine vocal arrangements.
Though the project produced only one album, it became a cult favourite among audiophiles and musicians for its depth, musical intelligence, and exceptional sonic craftsmanship, a testament to Leonard’s rare ability to merge commercial appeal with artistic integrity.
In the 2000s and 2010s, Leonard continued composing for film and performing as a pianist, releasing solo works that reflected his blend of classical and contemporary sensibilities.
