Recording Tuesday Night Music Club

Released on 3 August 1993, Tuesday Night Music Club marked the debut of Sheryl Crow, introducing her mix of pop, rock, folk, and Americana to a wide audience. Initially a slow seller, the album eventually became a global success following the release of All I Wanna Do in 1994, establishing Crow as one of the defining singer-songwriters of the decade.

The album was recorded primarily at Toad Hall Studio in Pasadena, California, with additional sessions at Kingsound Studios and Sound Factory in Los Angeles. It was produced by Bill Bottrell, with Dan Schwartz as assistant producer, and engineered by Blair Lamb. Mastering was completed by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles.

The project took its name from the loose collective of musicians and writers known as the Tuesday Night Music Club, which included Sheryl Crow, Bill Bottrell, David Baerwald, David Ricketts, Kevin Gilbert (Toy Matinee), Brian MacLeod, and Dan Schwartz. Together they co-wrote and performed most of the songs, developing the material in a relaxed, collaborative environment.

The sessions were characterised by a live, organic approach, reflecting Bottrell’s preference for natural performances over studio precision. Many tracks were captured with minimal overdubbing to preserve the feel of a live band playing together in the room.

The album’s artwork and presentation were handled by Richard Frankel (art direction), Jean Krikorian (design), and photographers Melodie McDaniel, Peggy Sirota, and Scott Henriksen, with Sheryl Crow contributing the liner notes.

Tuesday Night Music Club received widespread acclaim for its unpretentious songwriting and authentic sound. It went on to sell over seven million copies worldwide and earned Sheryl Crow three Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for All I Wanna Do.
