The SPL Venos Stereo Bus Compressor is designed to add size, depth, and presence to any stereo signal while drawing on the principles of classic variable bias tube compression. Built around the pleasing sonic character of vintage tube designs, the SPL Venos extends these traditional behaviours with two unique hyper compression modes called Focus and Punch, allowing the compressor to move into creative territories not possible with older hardware. The inclusion of SPL’s 120V technology enhances performance even further, delivering exceptional technical precision and a relaxed, natural sound.
At its core, the SPL Venos is a variable bias tube compressor. The remote cutoff tube stage is driven via a rectifier circuit that offers three diode types, allowing the compressor to change its attack and release behaviour depending on the selected control characteristic. The additional hyper compression modes are achieved with a special circuit that modifies the bias modulation to deliver a distinctive behaviour often described as negative compression. Focus mode provides firm yet vibrant control, while Punch mode delivers powerful impact without making the signal harsh.
Operation is highly intuitive thanks to stepped potentiometers and switches, with every parameter designed for quick recall. Once the correct input operating point is set, it is easy to compare different settings. The input, threshold, and bias each offer 41 steps of control, while the attack and release parameters provide six positions ranging from slow to fast. The output control also uses a 41 step stepped potentiometer, allowing precise level matching or gain recovery after compression.
The SPL Venos includes a series of modes that tailor the control signal path for different musical applications. Linear mode filters frequencies below 20 Hz from the control path. Modern mode uses an analogue bandpass filter to prevent the compressor from reacting to both low and high frequencies. Vintage mode employs a custom filter response developed by Wolfgang Neumann. Focus and Punch introduce the compressor’s unique hyper compression capabilities, while the Ext SC mode activates the side chain insert for external processing. The side chain insert provides balanced send and return connections and can be driven from external equalisation or even independent audio sources to influence the compression behaviour.
A large black VU meter displays gain reduction, and the GR Cal trimmer allows calibration of its indication. The SPL Venos also features two preset analogue EQ curves called AirBass and Tape, which sit in the audio path after the compression stage and before the output control. AirBass boosts lows and highs by around 2 dB, while Tape emulates the roll off associated with analogue tape machines.
All connections on the SPL Venos are gold plated XLR and TRS, wired in parallel and electronically balanced at a nominal level of +6 dB. A ground switch is included to eliminate ground loops where necessary. The unit is built to a high mechanical standard, featuring a 4 mm black anodised aluminium front panel, solid milled aluminium knobs, and a durable powder coated steel housing. Many components are mounted using through hole technology to ensure the best possible sonic quality.
SPL’s 120V technology forms the basis of the SPL Venos design. Operating at +/-60 V, it provides significantly higher internal headroom compared to typical audio devices running at +/-15 V. This results in superior dynamic range, lower noise, high overload resistance, and improved detail. The high voltage operation is made possible by SPL’s proprietary SUPRA operational amplifiers, developed in the 1990s by Wolfgang Neumann and first used in the MMC 1 mastering console. From there, the technology expanded into high end mastering equipment such as the PQ equaliser and is now used across SPL’s premium products for both studio and hi fi applications.
The SPL Venos benefits from a linear power supply featuring a toroidal transformer, with internal voltages regulated for the tube bias, relays, LEDs, and audio circuitry. SPL’s emphasis on subjective listening during development ensures that the SPL Venos combines engineering excellence with musicality, making it a powerful tool for modern mixing and mastering environments.
