Dolby Model 363 Noise Reduction System

Dolby Model 363
The Dolby Model 363 is a two channel professional noise reduction unit offering Dolby A type or Dolby SR processing through interchangeable modules, with built in calibration, transformerless balanced I/O, Auto Compare, and independent or stereo linked operation in a compact 1U design.

Dolby Model 363 Noise Reduction System Details

The Dolby Model 363 was introduced in 1987, arriving as a modernised successor to earlier Dolby frames by offering a compact two channel processor capable of running either Dolby A type or Dolby Spectral Recording (Dolby SR) noise reduction. Designed in a 1U high format, the Dolby Model 363 delivered professional grade encode and decode processing for music recording, film and video post production, and broadcast environments. It provided engineers with a flexible, reliable tool that integrated easily into existing systems while bringing the advantages of the latest Dolby SR technology to facilities that required high performance noise reduction within a minimal rack footprint.

The Dolby Model 363 accepted plug in Cat. No. 450 modules for Dolby A type and Cat. No. 300 modules for Dolby SR, giving users the option to configure it for either standard. Its design allowed the two internal channels to be operated independently or together as a stereo pair, with straightforward switching between record and playback functions. A built in calibration system, including a four element LED display, enabled fast and repeatable alignment by reading return levels from the recorder, and the supplied Set Up function allowed the correct mode to be selected depending on whether the studio used Dolby A type or Dolby SR alignment practices.

One of the notable strengths of the Dolby Model 363 was its electronically balanced transformerless input stage, which offered excellent common mode rejection and reduced sensitivity to ground loops. The output stage was also designed for professional line level operation with low distortion and very low noise performance. The unit incorporated Auto Compare, a feature that allowed instant comparison between encoded and unencoded audio, greatly assisting engineers during alignment and playback checks. The bypass facility for each channel made integration easy, and the operating controls were intentionally simple to ensure reliable performance even in fast paced studio environments.

The Dolby Model 363 maintained Dolby’s reputation for precise and transparent noise reduction, helping studios achieve cleaner recordings with improved dynamic range and greater clarity at low levels. By supporting both Dolby A type and Dolby SR in a compact chassis, the Dolby Model 363 became a valuable upgrade path for engineers transitioning from earlier systems to the then new Dolby SR standard, while maintaining compatibility with legacy Dolby A encoded tapes. Today it remains an important part of Dolby’s professional lineage, representing the shift towards higher performance noise reduction in the late analogue era.
