AKG D112 Bass Drum Microphone

The AKG D112 is a large diaphragm dynamic microphone developed for bass drum and low frequency instrument capture, widely used in both studio and live sound applications.

AKG D112 Bass Drum Microphone Details

The current production AKG D112 MKII is a cardioid dynamic microphone designed to deliver accurate and controlled low frequency performance at very high sound pressure levels. It uses a large diaphragm dynamic capsule combined with a bass resonance volume chamber to achieve a powerful response below 100 Hz.

The microphone is capable of handling sound pressure levels greater than 160 dB without distortion and incorporates an integrated hum compensation coil to minimise noise. A narrow band presence boost centred around 4 kHz is built into the response to support definition and articulation in dense mixes and high stage volume environments.

The AKG D112 MKII version introduces an integrated flexible mount while retaining the established acoustic and electrical design that has defined the D112 as a long standing industry benchmark.

AKG D112 Bass Drum Microphone Heritage

  • From 1986

    designated as AKG D112

Passive large diaphragm dynamic microphone with cardioid polar pattern. Utilised an acoustic bass chamber to extend low frequency response and a hum compensation coil to reduce electromagnetic interference. No active electronics or phantom power required.

The AKG D112 established itself as a standard bass drum microphone used extensively on stages and in studios worldwide. It gained a reputation for high SPL handling, durability, and a low frequency response tailored for kick drum and bass instruments. Its widespread adoption led to long term use across live sound reinforcement and recording environments, forming the foundation for later revisions.
