Neumann M 49 Studio Condensor Microphone

The Neumann M 49 V Set is the current production reissue of one of the company’s most significant valve studio microphones, returning the M 49 to Neumann’s catalogue in a form built to original specifications while incorporating selected practical refinements for modern studio use.

Neumann M 49 Studio Condensor Microphone Details

The Neumann M 49 V Set is presented as a reissue of the final M 49 c revision, retaining the classic tube circuit, output transformer, large acoustically open headbasket, and K 49 capsule architecture associated with later M 49 production. Neumann states that the microphone is made to original specifications using archived documentation, with the aim of bringing the M 49 back as an original-format production model rather than a reinterpretation. The microphone offers continuously variable remote pattern control from omnidirectional through cardioid to figure-8, including intermediate settings, with the pattern adjusted from the external NM V control unit. Neumann positions the M 49 V Set as both a vocal microphone and a universal studio microphone for a wide range of instruments.

For the current production version, Neumann states that the M 49 V uses the same circuitry as the M 49 c but replaces the historical Telefunken AC701k with a lower-noise subminiature tube. The microphone also adopts an RF-proof connector derived from the historical M 249 broadcast version in response to the greater electromagnetic interference present in modern studio environments. The supplied NM V control unit is designed to provide the correct heater voltage automatically for both the M 49 V and historical M 49 microphones, and it also adapts automatically to local mains voltage. The set is completed by the characteristic yoke mount, with the current version adding elements for mechanical decoupling and a cable holder intended to reduce cable-borne structure noise. Neumann also states that the microphone, case, and assembly are handmade in Germany, with hand soldering used in production.

The M 49 V also includes internal compatibility options intended to align the microphone more closely with specific historical configurations. In its standard delivery state it is configured to match the final M 49 c with a first-order 30Hz high-pass characteristic. Neumann states that an internal switch can lower the high-pass point to 12Hz to approximate the low-frequency response of early M 49 units produced before 1957, while another internal switch can place the microphone into fixed cardioid operation in the manner of the historical M 49 b. In this fixed-cardioid setting, Neumann states that sensitivity increases by around 2dB and equivalent noise level decreases by around 3dB. These internal switches are not intended for user operation and are instead to be handled by Neumann Service, although the microphone can be ordered in a preferred delivery-state configuration as a made-to-order option.

Neumann M 49 Studio Condensor Microphone Heritage

  • 1951 to 1957

    designated as M 49

Original version using the Hiller MSC2 tube. Early units did not yet include the later 30Hz high-pass behaviour referenced by Neumann in relation to the M 49 V’s compatibility options.

The M 49 was developed from a broadcast requirement for a universal microphone with continuously variable remote polar pattern control. Neumann states that prototypes were developed at Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk under Dr. Herbert Großkopf, with production beginning in 1951. The original M 49 established the platform that made the model one of the longest-produced Neumann valve microphones.
