The TC Electronic Intonator was a high-end vocal intonation processor designed for professional vocal recording and pitch correction. The TC Electronic Intonator was aimed at reducing the time spent on vocal retakes by giving recording engineers a dedicated real-time tool for correcting vocal pitch while preserving the character of the original performance. Alongside pitch correction, the TC Electronic Intonator also included vocal processing tools such as a De-Esser and an Adaptive LoCut filter designed specifically for vocal material.

The TC Electronic Intonator was based on TC Electronic’s DARC³ chip technology, with 96kHz internal processing and true 24-bit resolution. Its purpose was not simply to force a vocal into tune, but to allow controlled correction while retaining the details that identify a performance, including vibrato, initial intonation and the artist’s personal delivery. Correction could be limited to individual notes, helping the engineer target specific pitch issues rather than applying broad processing across the entire vocal.

The TC Electronic Intonator provided a transparent signal path with analogue and digital input and output options. Digital connectivity included AES/EBU, S/PDIF, Toslink and ADAT, while the unit supported 96kHz, 88.2kHz, 48kHz and 44.1kHz operation across both digital and analogue I/O. The analogue signal path was balanced and capable of professional operating levels, with gain available before the A/D converters and after the D/A converters to help make full use of the unit’s dynamic range.

A key part of the TC Electronic Intonator was its ability to operate in two signal setups. In Normal mode, the ADIOS analogue dual I/O configuration allowed simultaneous recording of processed and unprocessed vocals, making it possible to compare the corrected signal with the original performance. Digital sources could also be configured in the same way. In Dual mode, the TC Electronic Intonator could pitch-correct the signal in one channel while using the dynamics, De-Esser and LoCut processing on the signal in the other channel.

The pitch correction system allowed highly specific control. A custom scale function could be used to correct only a selected note, or a personal scale could be entered. The Pitch Window parameter determined when a note would be considered out of tune, while the Amount control limited how much pitch correction was applied. The Attack control determined how quickly correction began, helping preserve expressive details such as vibrato rather than removing them through overly fast correction.

The TC Electronic Intonator also included Audio-to-MIDI conversion, allowing incoming pitch history and correction history to be monitored or recorded. This gave engineers a way to track the vocal’s pitch behaviour during a session. Full MIDI automation was included, making time-based pitch shifting possible, while keyboard control allowed real-time manual pitch correction by selecting the notes to be processed. The front-panel keyboard also gave access to the root note of the current scale and the notes allowed for correction, while also indicating the incoming note.

The display on the TC Electronic Intonator showed the current root note and scale, along with the incoming signal and the amount of correction being applied. This provided visual confirmation of the pitch correction process as it happened. Manual Pitch control allowed correction to be added by hand, and the wheel could also be remote controlled from a keyboard modulation wheel or locked to a sequencer for synchronised changes.

In addition to pitch correction, the TC Electronic Intonator included a De-Esser using a relative threshold technique. This meant the threshold adapted to the average level of the source signal, maintaining a consistent relationship to the incoming vocal rather than using a fixed threshold. The Adaptive LoCut filter was pitch controlled, dynamically adjusting the cutoff frequency according to the incoming signal. Instead of removing all low frequencies beneath a fixed point, it adjusted the filtering so that unnecessary low-frequency content could be reduced without removing more low end than required.

The TC Electronic Intonator also included user-friendly TPDF dithering. Since the unit had 24-bit output resolution, dither could be applied when interfacing with equipment operating at a lower resolution. Output dither was independent and available from 8-bit to 24-bit, helping reduce distortion when reducing digital word length.

Retrospectively, the TC Electronic Intonator represents a dedicated hardware approach to vocal pitch correction at a time when real-time digital pitch processing was becoming an important studio tool. Rather than combining pitch correction into a general effects processor, the TC Electronic Intonator focused specifically on vocal intonation, MIDI control, pitch tracking, De-Essing, adaptive filtering and professional digital I/O. Its design reflected the late-1990s transition towards precise digital vocal editing while still giving engineers direct hardware control over the correction process.
