Hitachi produced a distinctive range of hi-fi cassette decks during the late 1970s and early 1980s, combining bold industrial design with advanced recording features such as 3-head layouts, dual-capstan transports, direct-drive mechanisms, Dolby noise reduction and automatic tape calibration systems. Models such as the D-2200M, D-3300M and D-5500 showed Hitachi’s interest in precision tape handling, detailed metering and computer-assisted recording control, making the brand an important part of the classic Japanese cassette deck era.

The Hitachi D-900 is a top-of-the-range late-1970s stereo cassette deck with a dual-capstan 3-head transport, Hitachi Siamesed R/P heads, Dolby noise reduction, Dolby calibration control, illuminated Peak/VU meters, front-loading cassette access and servo-assisted controls. It was designed as a high-specification hi-fi cassette recorder, with tape monitoring during recording and tape selection for normal, CrO2 and FeCr cassette types.

The Hitachi D-5500 is a 3-head stereo cassette deck with Unitorque direct drive, ATRS automatic tape response calibration, Dolby B noise reduction, a detachable infrared remote-control block and support for normal, CrO2 and FeCr cassette tapes. It was one of Hitachi’s most advanced late-1970s cassette decks, combining automatic tape matching with a substantial silver front-panel design and large illuminated level meters.
