Crowded House’s Woodface, produced by Mitchell Froom and Neil Finn, engineered by Tchad Blake, mixed by Bob Clearmountain, and mastered by Bob Ludwig, was recorded on Studer A800 analogue tape through Neve 8068 and SSL 4000 E/G consoles at A&M, Periscope, and Ocean Way Studios. Featuring Froom’s Hammond B3 and Chamberlin textures, Neil Finn’s Fender and Rickenbacker guitars, and Blake’s meticulous analogue engineering, it remains one of the finest-sounding melodic rock albums of the early 1990s.

Crowded House Woodface

Recording Woodface

Released in July 1991, Woodface represented Crowded House at their most ambitious and sonically refined. Produced by Mitchell Froom and Neil Finn, engineered by Tchad Blake, mixed by Bob Clearmountain, and mastered by Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk, the album showcased the perfect balance of warmth, depth, and melody that defined the band’s early-1990s sound.

Recording took place between 1989 and 1991 at A&M Studios in Los Angeles, Periscope Studios in Melbourne, and Ocean Way Studios in Hollywood. These facilities were equipped with Neve and SSL consoles, Studer 24-track analogue recorders, and top-level outboard gear, ensuring a clean, detailed analogue sound.

Producer Mitchell Froom’s signature keyboard textures were created using a combination of Hammond B3 organ, Mellotron, and Chamberlin. These instruments had been central to his production aesthetic throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, including on albums by Crowded House, Suzanne Vega, and Los Lobos. Froom’s approach was to blend organic instrumentation with subtly processed ambience, creating a sense of intimacy around the vocals.

Engineer Tchad Blake, who worked closely with Froom on multiple projects, recorded the sessions to Studer A800 analogue tape through Neve 8068 and SSL 4000 E/G consoles, depending on the studio. Blake was known for his careful use of room microphones and unconventional mic placement, often using Neumann U47 and AKG C414 condensers for vocals and acoustics, Shure SM57 and Sennheiser MD421 dynamics on guitar amps and drums, and AKG D12 or Electro-Voice RE20 for kick drum. He also employed a range of EMT plate reverbs, Lexicon 480L, and AMS RMX16 units for ambience.

The guitar sounds that dominate Woodface were built around Neil Finn’s Fender Telecaster and Rickenbacker 330, recorded through Vox AC30 and Fender Twin Reverb amplifiers. His tones were captured with minimal processing, typically using a Shure SM57 and ribbon mic combination. The band’s rhythm section, Nick Seymour on bass and Paul Hester on drums, was tracked live, giving the album a natural, cohesive groove.

Mixing engineer Bob Clearmountain polished the album’s final sound at his New York mix room using an SSL 4000 G+ console, ensuring clarity, stereo depth, and balanced dynamics across all tracks. Bob Ludwig’s mastering at Masterdisk gave the record its open, dynamic tone without sacrificing warmth.

Woodface was the first Crowded House album to feature Neil and Tim Finn writing together, merging Tim’s harmonic sensibility with Neil’s melodic style. Tracks such as Weather with You and It’s Only Natural demonstrated how their voices intertwined seamlessly, recorded in tight unison with minimal overdubbing.

The result was one of Crowded House’s most enduring albums, a polished yet emotionally rich production that stands as a high point in Australian and New Zealand popular music.
