Doug Sax was one of the true pioneers of modern mastering and founder of The Mastering Lab, the first independent mastering facility in the world. Renowned for his uncompromising audio standards, musical judgement, and all-valve signal chain, he shaped the sound of hundreds of landmark albums. His work combined transparency, warmth, and dynamic precision, earning him the respect of artists, engineers, and audiophiles alike. Doug Sax mastered some of the most acclaimed recordings in history, including albums by Pink Floyd, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, and Diana Krall.
Born in Los Angeles in 1936, Doug Sax studied music at the University of California, Los Angeles, and was a professional trumpet player before entering the recording industry. In 1967 he co-founded The Mastering Lab with his brother Sherwood Sax and chief electronics designer Lincoln Mayorga. The facility opened in Hollywood and was the first to operate entirely independently of a record label, allowing clients to choose mastering purely on sonic merit rather than corporate affiliation.
From the outset, Sax’s approach was revolutionary. Every piece of equipment at The Mastering Lab was designed and built in-house, using custom valve circuitry and hand-matched components. This signal path, coupled with his extraordinary ear, produced a natural, lifelike sound that became his trademark.
In 1973 he mastered Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, a record widely considered one of the finest-sounding albums ever produced. His work with The Eagles, Jackson Browne, The Rolling Stones, and countless other artists through the 1970s and 1980s established him as one of the world’s foremost mastering engineers.
Sax was also a mentor and advocate for the art of high-fidelity mastering. He founded Sheffield Lab, a direct-to-disc audiophile label that demonstrated his commitment to uncompromised sound quality. Throughout his career he continued to master contemporary artists, maintaining his philosophy of sonic honesty until his death in 2015.
