Tom Jung began his career in the late 1960s as a recording engineer at Sound 80 Studios, a facility he co-founded with Herb Pilhofer in Minneapolis. Sound 80 quickly gained a reputation for technical excellence, hosting sessions with artists such as Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. During this period, Jung became deeply interested in capturing music with absolute sonic integrity, focusing on microphone choice, placement, and maintaining an uncoloured signal path.
In 1978, Jung and the Sound 80 team made history by recording Flim & the BB’s, Tricycle using the prototype 3M 32-track digital recorder. The album is widely recognised as the world’s first all-digital commercial release, marking the beginning of a new era in recording technology. Building on this innovation, Jung founded DMP (Digital Music Products) in 1983, one of the first record labels to record, mix, and master exclusively in digital. His recordings for DMP became renowned among audiophiles for their extraordinary clarity, dynamic range, and natural realism.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Tom Jung continued to explore emerging digital technologies, including DSD and SACD mastering. His work with high-resolution formats set new benchmarks for quality and directly influenced industry standards in digital recording and mastering. Today, Jung remains a respected authority on digital audio and continues to consult on advanced recording system design and mastering processes.
