Mid-Side Processing

Mixing & Mastering

Mid-side processing separates a stereo signal into its centre (mid) and sides, allowing independent control over each to enhance width, clarity, or focus in a mix or master.

Mid-side (M/S) processing converts a stereo signal into two components: the mid channel, containing elements common to both left and right channels (such as vocals or bass), and the side channel, containing the differences between them (stereo ambience and width).

This allows engineers to manipulate spatial characteristics independently, for instance, boosting the sides to widen the stereo image or compressing the mid to stabilise the centre. M/S techniques are used in EQ, compression, and mastering workflows to achieve precise stereo control while maintaining mono compatibility.
