Oversampling

Digital Audio

Oversampling increases the internal sampling rate of a digital system to improve processing accuracy and reduce aliasing and distortion.

Oversampling multiplies the base sampling rate by a fixed factor—such as 2x, 4x, or 8x—allowing filters and digital processing to operate with higher precision. This helps avoid aliasing artefacts and improves the performance of plug-ins and converters.

In A/D and D/A converters, oversampling enables gentler filtering slopes, leading to smoother frequency response and lower phase distortion. In software instruments and plug-ins, oversampling is often used during non-linear processing, such as saturation or distortion, to prevent digital artefacts.
