Quadraphonic sound, often called quad sound, is an early form of surround audio that uses four channels to reproduce sound from four speakers placed at the corners of the listening space. It was developed in the 1970s to create a more immersive and realistic sound field than conventional stereo.

Quadraphonic sound represents one of the earliest attempts to move beyond stereo by surrounding the listener with audio from multiple directions. The four channels — front left, front right, rear left, and rear right — provide both depth and movement, allowing engineers to place sounds not only across the front image but also behind the listener. This offered a greater sense of realism, particularly for orchestral recordings, live performances, and experimental music.

Several competing formats were introduced during the 1970s, including SQ and QS matrix systems, which encoded four channels into two and later decoded them on playback, and CD-4 (Compatible Discrete 4), which transmitted discrete four-channel information using ultrasonic carrier signals. However, incompatibility between formats, high equipment costs, and technical limitations prevented quadraphonic sound from achieving widespread adoption.

Despite its commercial failure, the quadraphonic era introduced key concepts that influenced later multichannel formats such as Dolby Surround, 5.1, and eventually Dolby Atmos. Many quadraphonic recordings from the 1970s have since been reissued in modern surround formats, revealing the innovation and ambition of early immersive sound engineering.

Quadraphonic playback required four speakers and a specialised amplifier or decoder capable of separating the four channels accurately. When correctly aligned, it could produce an enveloping sound field far beyond what stereo could achieve at the time.
