Mix L.A. History

After decades of work at major Los Angeles studios, Chris Lord-Alge founded Mix L.A. to create a personal environment tailored to his workflow. The studio was purpose-built around his signature SSL 4000 G+ console and racks of analogue compressors, EQs, and reverbs that had defined his sound throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Located in Tarzana, the studio was acoustically designed by George Augspurger, ensuring translation accuracy across all playback systems.

Since opening, Mix L.A. has been the setting for mixes by some of the most successful artists in the world, including Green Day, Muse, My Chemical Romance, Bruce Springsteen, and Madonna. Lord-Alge’s distinctive combination of analogue warmth and aggressive clarity has made the studio a global benchmark for radio-ready mixes.

Over the years, Mix L.A. has remained almost entirely analogue, with Lord-Alge preferring tactile hardware and real-time decision-making over digital automation. The control room is meticulously maintained to ensure the SSL and outboard chain sound identical day after day, allowing him to mix quickly and intuitively without technical interruption.

Mix L.A. Signature Sound / Design

Mix L.A. is engineered for sonic power and reliability. The control room features perfect stereo imaging, controlled low-frequency response, and an immersive nearfield environment optimised for the SSL 4000 G+ console. The outboard racks are loaded with vintage and modern processors, each chosen for its character and musicality.

The result is a sound defined by high-energy transients, wide stereo imaging, and cohesive midrange presence. Every element, from compressors to reverbs, contributes to the mix signature that has come to define Chris Lord-Alge’s work: bold, polished, and instantly recognisable.
