Real World Studios is one of the most advanced and architecturally stunning recording studios in the world. Founded by Peter Gabriel in 1989, it was conceived as a creative environment where artists from every culture could collaborate freely and capture performances in a natural, inspiring space. Combining state-of-the-art technology with striking rural surroundings, Real World Studios has become synonymous with sonic excellence, artistic innovation, and global collaboration. It remains at the heart of Peter Gabriel’s Real World label and continues to host world-class sessions for film, television, and album production.
Peter Gabriel established Real World Studios following the international success of his So album, produced by Daniel Lanois in 1986. Having worked in conventional studios for years, Gabriel sought a space that encouraged musical creativity without the sterile constraints of typical control-room design. He purchased a former water-mill complex near the village of Box in Wiltshire and transformed it into a purpose-built recording and residential facility.
Designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and acoustician Andy Munro, Real World was completed in 1989. The centrepiece is the Big Room, a vast, light-filled recording space featuring natural stone walls, oak beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a millpond. The studio’s design encourages live interaction between musicians while providing pristine acoustics and exceptional sightlines. Its integration of architecture and technology marked a radical departure from conventional studio design and has since inspired facilities around the world.
Since opening, Real World Studios has welcomed a diverse array of artists, from global icons to emerging talents. Recording sessions have ranged from orchestral film scores to world music collaborations, while its advanced technical infrastructure supports everything from traditional analogue recording to immersive surround and Dolby Atmos production. Beyond its role as a studio, Real World functions as a cultural hub, hosting workshops, performances, and events that reflect Gabriel’s lifelong commitment to musical diversity.
