Sony Music Studios Tokyo History

Located in Tokyo’s Roppongi district, Sony Music Studios Tokyo was conceived as a showcase for Sony’s own professional audio innovations. The complex was purpose-built with multiple recording, mixing, and mastering rooms, each designed by world-class acousticians to achieve near-perfect frequency response and isolation. Studio 1, the largest room, accommodates full orchestral sessions and features variable acoustics to suit everything from pop ensembles to film scoring.

Each control room is equipped with high-end SSL and Neve consoles, Studer multitrack machines, and Sony’s own PCM and DASH digital recorders, reflecting the company’s legacy in digital audio development. The facility also pioneered the use of DSD and SACD mastering, making it one of the first studios in the world capable of producing in that ultra-high-resolution format.

Over the years, Sony Music Studios Tokyo has hosted countless top artists from Japan and abroad, including Hikaru Utada, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yoshiki, Namie Amuro, and Kenji Kawai, as well as international orchestral and soundtrack projects recorded for Sony Pictures. The mastering division, long regarded as the finest in Asia, has handled releases for both the Japanese and global markets, ensuring the studio’s reputation as a technical and creative benchmark.
