Capable of adding subtle control or aggressive character, the A-Designs NAIL handles heavy compression without dulling the high end. It excels at gently managing dynamics in the background, but can also be driven hard without compromising clarity or tone. The unit offers stereo link and dual mono modes, making it equally effective for stereo bus work or tracking applications. In dual mono, separate settings on each channel can add width to a mix.
The A-Designs NAIL’s dynamic control section includes a unique combination of Threshold, Hard Threshold, and Filter, providing detailed command over compression depth, activation point, and target frequency range. The compressor operates without a traditional Ratio control, instead self-adjusting its behaviour according to the input material. With Hard Threshold disengaged, it behaves much like a classic optical compressor, simple and musical, requiring only threshold and gain to operate effectively.
For advanced shaping, Hard Threshold and the variable high-pass Filter (adjustable from 8Hz to 250Hz) work together to prevent excessive low-frequency energy from triggering unwanted compression. This allows the low end to remain powerful and present, without disrupting the rest of the mix. Unlike multi-band compression, the A-Designs NAIL achieves this without dividing the audio into separate frequency bands, preserving natural tonal balance.
Attack, Release, and Gain controls are fully variable, with Attack and Release responding dynamically to both the Hard Threshold setting and the program material. This behaviour makes the unit more adaptable and musical than fixed-curve compression designs. Additional controls include an In/Out toggle for instant A/B comparisons, Stereo Link On/Off, and LED metering that can switch between gain reduction and output level. The meter ladder is designed for fast response and high visibility, even from across a dim control room.
Another standout feature is the Mix knob, which allows continuous blending between dry and compressed signal. This built-in parallel compression function avoids the need for external routing or extra mixer channels. It also enables precise adjustment of compression intensity without altering the core settings, adding major flexibility for any mixing workflow.
