3M 79 Series Multitrack Recorder Details

The 3M 79 Series Multitrack Recorders were professional audio tape machines engineered for demanding studio environments. Available in 2, 4, 8, 16, and 24-track configurations, the 3M 79 Series was widely adopted by top studios around the world for its consistent performance and robust design. Designed with 3M’s proprietary IsoLoop differential capstan drive, the transport mechanism maintained extremely low wow and flutter, ensured excellent head-to-tape contact, and delivered fast, accurate tape handling. Logic-controlled mode changes allowed fingertip operation with minimal risk of tape damage or transport jams.

The 3M 79 Series was engineered with flexibility in mind. All multitrack models offered standard variable speed control from 6 to 36 ips, and fixed speed operation at 7.5, 15, or 30 ips with automatic equalisation per speed. A Selectake locator system was offered as an optional accessory. Channel electronics were built onto individual plug-in cards, accessible from the front of the unit and each with its own record failure indicator for simplified maintenance. Equalisation settings were selectable per channel and supported NAB, AES, or CCIR standards, with the 2- and 4-track models also including over-dub capabilities.

All electronics in the 3M 79  were tailored for optimal sync and normal playback with separate EQ adjustments. Studio integration was further enhanced by support for both ¼-inch and ½-inch tape formats on 2- and 4-track models, and expansion capabilities allowing the 8-track to be upgraded to 16- or 24-track, and 16-track upgraded to 24-track. The reel drive was designed for heavy-duty use, with solid-state power switching, 300 ips nominal winding speed, and support for 14-inch reels.

Signal-to-noise performance of the 3M 79 was rated at 68 dB (normal and sync) using 3M 206 or 207 tape at reference conditions. Frequency response ranged from 40 Hz to 15 kHz depending on speed, with low flutter and ±0.2% timing accuracy. Full remote control was included as standard, with rapid start, stop, and rewind times.

As a reflection of 3M’s dedication to long-term reliability, the 3M 79 Series recorders also offered solid resale value and were supported by a widespread network of 12 major service centres across the United States, as well as a rapid-response team based at 3M’s St. Paul headquarters.
