DMP Studios was the in-house recording facility of Digital Music Products (DMP), the pioneering record label founded by Tom Jung in 1983. Established in Stamford, Connecticut, DMP Studios was among the first purpose-built digital recording environments in the world. Designed to achieve absolute sonic purity and technical precision, it became the foundation for more than a hundred high-resolution jazz and classical releases that set new standards in digital recording. DMP Studios embodied Tom Jung’s philosophy of transparency, minimalism, and fidelity, bridging the gap between the early PCM era and the birth of high-resolution digital formats such as DSD and SACD.
Following his groundbreaking work at Sound 80 Studios in Minneapolis, Tom Jung founded DMP (Digital Music Products) to explore the creative and technical potential of digital recording without compromise. To support this goal, he built DMP Studios in Stamford, Connecticut, as a fully digital facility designed around the most advanced converters, monitoring systems, and recording chains available.
From its inception, DMP Studios was equipped with custom-modified Sony PCM systems and discrete A/D converters developed to Jung’s exact specifications. Every component, from the microphone preamplifiers to the monitoring amplifiers, was selected or customised to maintain the cleanest possible signal path. The control room was acoustically neutral, enabling the precise monitoring essential for high-resolution digital mastering.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, DMP Studios produced a catalogue of recordings that became reference standards for audiophiles and engineers worldwide. Artists such as Flim & the BB’s, Warren Bernhardt, and the DMP All-Stars recorded albums that showcased not only musical excellence but also the technical possibilities of digital audio when executed without compromise. These sessions demonstrated that digital recording could deliver warmth, depth, and realism equal to, or exceeding, the best analogue systems of the time.
By the early 2000s, as high-resolution digital formats evolved and Tom Jung’s focus shifted toward mastering and consultancy work, DMP Studios concluded its operations. However, its influence continues through countless engineers who cite DMP’s recordings as benchmarks of digital sound quality.
