Born and raised in California, Val Garay began his career as a musician before transitioning into engineering during the late 1960s. He started at Los Angeles studios such as The Record Plant and Sound Factory, quickly building a reputation for meticulous work and an ability to capture warmth and clarity in equal measure.

Val Garay’s early engineering credits included albums for Linda Ronstadt, Andrew Gold, and Jackson Browne. In 1981, he achieved worldwide recognition as producer and engineer of Kim Carnes’ Mistaken Identity, which featured the global hit Bette Davis Eyes. The single won multiple Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, and solidified Garay’s place among the elite of West Coast producers.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Val Garay worked with many of the top names in pop and rock, including James Taylor, Don Henley, Dolly Parton, Randy Meisner, and The Motels. His productions were noted for their clean, balanced mixes and natural sense of space, characteristics that reflected his deep understanding of both the musical and technical aspects of recording.
