Capitol Studios Los Angeles is one of the most iconic recording facilities in the world and a cornerstone of American music history. Located beneath the landmark Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood, Capitol Studios opened in 1956 as the recording home of Capitol Records’ artists and quickly became synonymous with sonic excellence. Known for its unparalleled acoustics, world-class equipment, and legendary echo chambers designed by Les Paul, Capitol Studios has been the creative home for generations of artists spanning jazz, pop, rock, and film music.
When Capitol Records completed its state-of-the-art headquarters in 1956, the goal was to create a studio complex that could deliver the highest fidelity available. The facility included four recording rooms and eight underground echo chambers designed by guitarist, inventor, and studio pioneer Les Paul. These chambers became a defining feature of the Capitol sound, providing natural reverberation that remains unmatched to this day.
Capitol Studios’ early sessions featured legendary artists such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, and Judy Garland, whose recordings defined the golden age of American popular music. Sinatra’s Come Fly with Me and Nat King Cole’s Love Is the Thing showcased the lush, open sound that became synonymous with the studio’s acoustic design.
As music evolved through the 1960s and 1970s, Capitol Studios adapted seamlessly, accommodating rock and contemporary acts including The Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, and Bob Seger. By the 1980s, the facility was also a premier site for film and television scoring, serving composers such as John Williams, James Newton Howard, and Alan Silvestri. The studio underwent several upgrades over the decades, yet it has retained its original acoustic character and historic charm.
Today, Capitol Studios remains one of the premier recording and mastering facilities in the world, serving major artists, orchestras, and film productions while preserving over six decades of musical legacy.
Equipped with classic Neve, API, and custom Capitol consoles, Studer and Ampex tape machines, and a vast microphone collection including vintage Neumann U47s and Telefunken ELA M 251s, the facility offers a blend of vintage warmth and modern precision. Capitol’s mastering suites are also legendary, having handled countless classic releases and modern remasters.
