Sony SRP-L210 Compressor Expander

Sony SRP-L210
Sony SRP-L210 delivers a versatile combination of compression, expansion, harmonics processing, and peak limiting in a dual-channel analogue format, suitable for both studio and live applications.

Sony SRP-L210 Compressor Expander Details

The Sony SRP-L210 is an analogue 2-channel dynamic processor designed to provide a comprehensive range of dynamics control functions within a single rack unit. Built using advanced Sony audio technology, the Sony SRP-L210 combines compressor, limiter, expander, gate, and harmonics processing, allowing each channel to operate independently or be linked for stereo operation.

This flexibility enables it to be used across a wide range of applications, from live sound reinforcement to multitrack recording environments. The inclusion of a LINK switch on the front panel allows both channels to function as a stereo pair while maintaining independent control over each channel’s parameters, enabling precise adjustment and creative control.

Each channel of the Sony SRP-L210 incorporates compressor/limiter functionality (Using the THAT 2155 VCA Chip) alongside an upward expander and a downward expander acting as a gate. The compressor features a soft-knee characteristic, preserving the natural tonal balance of the source signal even under heavy compression. Gain reduction is displayed via a 7-segment indicator per channel, providing clear visual feedback during operation. The expander section offers control over threshold, ratio, attack time, and release time, allowing users to extend dynamic range or refine signal behaviour, particularly when working with analogue tape sources.

A harmonics function is included on each channel, designed to restore or enhance high-frequency content lost during compression. This feature is particularly effective when processing instruments such as guitar, electric bass, vocals, and drums, allowing for a more defined and present sound. The Sony SRP-L210 also supports external key input and output per channel, enabling advanced dynamics processing such as ducking or frequency-dependent compression when used with external equalisation.

The unit features a peak limiter function accessible via switches on the rear panel. This limiter engages at +10dB above the compressor threshold, preventing transient peaks from passing through and avoiding clipping when recording to digital systems such as DAT recorders. Output level controls are provided for each channel, allowing precise adjustment of signal levels after dynamics processing has been applied.

The Sony SRP-L210 is equipped with balanced XLR and phone jack connections for inputs and outputs, along with dedicated key input and output connections. Its design supports integration into both professional studio setups and live sound systems, offering reliable and flexible dynamics control in a compact format.
