The Alpine AL-80 was a 3-head stereo cassette deck released in 1981 and sold through 1982, with some early versions badged as the Alpage AL-80. Positioned as a serious recording deck, it combined separate recording and playback head functions, Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction, metal tape compatibility, and detailed manual recording adjustment in a compact, rack-style chassis. It was also associated with five user reviews, reflecting its continued interest among cassette deck enthusiasts.
The Alpine AL-80 used a 3-head system that separated the recording and playback functions, allowing the deck to use different head gaps for each task. The recording section used a wider gap, while playback used a narrower gap, and the deck allowed instant comparison between the incoming source and the recorded tape. This made it possible to monitor the recording directly as it was being made, a key advantage of a true 3-head cassette deck.
The transport and recording system of the Alpine AL-80 were designed for accurate tape handling and user adjustment. The deck supported Type I, CrO2 and Metal tapes, with a 4-position tape selector, bias fine control and recording level controls. A multiplex filter was included, and the front panel provided separate controls for microphone and line recording, together with mono microphone support.
Noise reduction was provided by a double Dolby system with both Dolby B and Dolby C. The Dolby circuits were fitted to the left and right channels for both recording and playback, with encoding applied during recording and decoding during playback. Dolby C was included for greater noise reduction performance, while Dolby B compatibility was retained for use with tapes recorded using the earlier Dolby system.
The Alpine AL-80 also featured an optical peak indicator, designed to provide continuous level display with fast response. A 4-digit tape/time counter with multi-memory, auto-play, auto-rewind, illuminated cassette compartment, output level control and optional independent remote control units completed the feature set. The rack-style front panel, optional rack handles and broad control layout made it a visually distinctive deck within Alpine’s early 1980s cassette range.
