The Neumann TLM 49 utilises the same K 47 large diaphragm condenser capsule found in the Neumann U 47 and M 49, combined with the iconic large, acoustically open headgrille of the M 49. While it shares the acoustic design of these vintage models, the TLM 49 replaces electron tubes with a transformerless solid-state FET circuit. This design choice eliminates the need for an external power supply or tube replacements while maintaining high reliability.
The electronic circuit is specifically designed to reproduce the sonic behaviour of tube circuits, including intentional soft saturation at higher sound pressure levels. This results in a maximum SPL of 110 dB for 0.5% THD, rising to 129 dB at 5% THD. The microphone achieves a substantially improved self-noise figure of 12 dB-A, offering the dynamic behaviour of its predecessors with modern low-noise performance.
With a fixed cardioid directional pattern, the Neumann TLM 49 is primarily designed for vocal applications, delivering a clear bass and superb midrange with a gentle presence boost above 2 kHz. It is also effective for recording acoustic instruments such as acoustic guitar and upright bass. The set includes the Neumann TLM 49 microphone and an EA 3 shock mount, finished in nickel colour.
The microphone operates on standard 48 V phantom power (P48, IEC 61938) with a current consumption of 3.2 mA. It features an XLR 3 F connector and a rated impedance of 50 ohms. The frequency response spans from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, ensuring a wide bandwidth suitable for professional studio recording environments.
