The ADA MP-1 MIDI Tube Guitar Preamp arrived in 1987 as one of the most advanced programmable guitar preamps of its era. By combining real tube gain stages with digitally stored presets and full MIDI functionality, it offered an unprecedented level of tonal flexibility. With tri-state voicing, 128 user memories, programmable EQ, stereo analogue chorus and software-upgradeable firmware, the ADA MP-1 set a new benchmark for guitarists seeking total control of their sound.
The ADA MP-1 introduced guitarists to a level of programmability that had previously been unavailable in a tube preamp. It featured two low noise 12AX7/A7025 tubes at the core of its Clean Tube and Distortion Tube voices, while the Solid State mode provided a different tonal character with its own programmable compression level. Every programme slot offered three independent gain controls and a fully programmable four-band EQ, giving players detailed control over bass, midrange and treble, with a generous ±16 dB range for bass and treble adjustment.
Its Tri-State Voicing allowed players to assign Clean Tube, Distortion Tube or Solid State circuits on a per-programme basis. The stereo analogue chorus and doubler were designed to complement the tube architecture with a warm, musical modulation effect. A programmable effects loop with adjustable send and return levels gave freedom to integrate external pedals and processors into the signal chain.
Connectivity and usability were well thought out. A front-panel instrument input made quick access easy, while the stereo outputs on the rear could be switched between line level for direct mixing use or instrument level for feeding guitar amplifiers. An active balanced input further expanded integration options. A stereo headphone output with its own level control enabled silent practice, and the output level knob allowed fast volume changes without altering tone.
The ADA MP-1 was also built around a software-based operating system. When powered on, the display shows the installed software version, and updates could be applied simply by replacing the EPROM. MIDI integration was forward-looking, offering MIDI In, Out and Thru, re-assignable (mapable) programme numbers, and selectable channel modes including Omni and Off. Logic-controlled FET switching ensured instantaneous preset changes, while the Lexan membrane switch panel eliminated the wear issues associated with traditional pots.
The ADA MP-1 became one of the most recognisable rack preamps of its time, widely adopted in studios and by guitarists who needed consistent, programmable tones with the feel of a genuine tube circuit. It delivered a level of tonal variety and recall reliability that made it a favourite during the rise of large rack systems.
The ADA MP-1 changed how guitarists approached tone switching and rig design. Instead of relying on multi-channel amplifiers or pedalboard choreography, players could now store clean, crunch and high gain tones inside a single rack preamp and recall them instantly via MIDI. This made the ADA MP-1 a key player in the rise of programmable rack systems. Its tri-state voicing broadened the tonal palette beyond what traditional amps could offer, while its analogue chorus, in combination with tube circuitry, created a sound that many players still regard as distinctive. The ADA MP-1 helped shape the evolution of hybrid analogue and digital guitar technology, influencing the development of later programmable preamps and processors.
