The Altec 436C Compressor Amplifier is a self-powered, level-controlling amplifier designed for automatic gain regulation across a wide range of audio applications. Capable of reducing gain by up to 30 dB in response to strong input signals, it performs this function quietly and quickly without introducing thumps. It features variable threshold/compression ratio and release time controls, offering flexible configuration for virtually any installation scenario.
The Altec 436C Compressor Amplifier is suitable for use in recording studios, TV broadcasting, and public address systems. It minimises differences in microphone performance levels and distances, enabling balanced input control for multiple programme sources. Its bridging input allows for simultaneous handling of two or more signal paths, making it ideal for voice-over-music applications. In industrial or loud environments, the unit helps avoid blasting and distortion by regulating high-level signals, safeguarding both amplifiers and speakers.
In TV production, variety shows, and dramatic or musical broadcasts, the Altec 436C enhances consistency in audio levels, thus reducing the need for manual intervention during performance. All controls, fuses, and a compression meter are accessible via a hinged front panel for convenient maintenance. Wiring is straightforward, with barrier-type terminals and a pre-wired power cord.
An optional gain control allows it to serve as a straight high-level amplifier when the 6AL5 tube is removed. The unit accommodates balanced inputs and transformer-isolated outputs and can be rack-mounted or installed in an Altec 12495 Cabinet. Remote compression monitoring can be handled with the optional Altec 6049 Meter.
The Altec 436C is housed in a compact, dark green chassis and provides reliable level control for studio, broadcast, or PA use. With a fixed 50 ms attack time and adjustable release and threshold settings, the Altec 436C delivers responsive and adaptable audio compression without compromise.
