beyerdynamic M 88 Dynamic Moving-Coil Microphone

The beyerdynamic M 88 is a dynamic moving-coil microphone with a hypercardioid polar pattern, continuously handmade in Germany since 1963 and designed for demanding studio and live applications.

beyerdynamic M 88 Dynamic Moving-Coil Microphone Details

The beyerdynamic M 88 is a dynamic moving-coil microphone developed for flexible professional use in both studio and stage environments. Manufactured at the company headquarters in Heilbronn, Germany, the beyerdynamic M 88 is handcrafted with acoustically relevant components produced in-house, including the diaphragm, dynamic transducer and microphone grille. The grille is constructed from a three-layer stainless steel mesh, contributing to its robust build quality.

Designed to meet the highest technical demands, the beyerdynamic M 88 features a wide and balanced frequency response of 30 Hz to 20,000 Hz, enabling natural sound reproduction across a broad range of sources. Its good bass response and pronounced proximity effect make it particularly suitable for kick drum applications, where the optional WS 59 AZ wind shield is recommended. The balanced frequency response ensures that diverse sound sources are reproduced accurately, creating a signal that can be processed with ease.

The hypercardioid polar pattern of the beyerdynamic M 88 is engineered to approach theoretically possible directional values. Sound from the front is prioritised, while signals from the sides and rear are significantly reduced. This results in excellent channel separation and reduced susceptibility to crosstalk from nearby sources. The directional properties also reduce the risk of acoustic feedback to a minimum, making the beyerdynamic M 88 suitable for use in high level or noisy environments.

A hum-bucking coil is incorporated to eliminate background noise caused by magnetic fields. With a sensitivity of 2.9 mV/Pa and a neodymium magnet system, the beyerdynamic M 88 delivers a powerful output while requiring minimal amplification. Its pressure gradient operating principle, hypercardioid pattern and high rear attenuation of greater than 23 dB at 120 degrees contribute to its controlled and precise capture characteristics.

Constructed with a brass casing and fitted with a 3-pin male XLR connection, the beyerdynamic M 88 is supplied with the MA-CL 25 microphone clamp featuring a 3/8 inch internal thread and 25 mm internal diameter. The microphone’s polarity wiring ensures that positive pressure produces positive voltage on pin 2.
