The Black Box HG-2 is a stereo, line-level unit created to deliver saturation, harmonic enhancement, natural compression, increased RMS, and sonic enhancement for mixing and mastering tasks. It is engineered to achieve results that would normally require several different processors, offering a streamlined and superior solution.
The Black Box HG-2 features custom input transformers that split the signal into two distinct paths. The primary signal route passes through a 6U8A pentode tube stage, which then feeds into a triode stage. This design allows for a wide range of tonal character, from delicate harmonic detail to rich, full-bodied saturation.
The second signal path operates in parallel, using a pair of 12AT7 tubes that are voiced specifically for harmonic content and saturation. A three-position frequency selector switch tailors the tonal focus of this parallel path: the ‘low’ setting enhances low mids and sub frequencies, the ‘flat’ setting applies saturation across the full frequency spectrum, and the ‘high’ setting emphasises upper mids and high frequencies. This flexibility enables users to brighten dull recordings, reinforce the low end, or add overall energy to a track. The saturation knob determines how much of the parallel processed signal is blended into the main signal before it reaches the pentode stage.
After the signal travels through both stages, it reaches a passive output attenuation section, followed by custom output transformers that complete the signal path.
Additional tonal shaping is available on the Black Box HG-2 via the ‘air’ switch, which provides a gentle high-frequency lift. An ‘alt’ tube switch allows the user to toggle between two different 12AT7 tubes in the parallel circuit, offering distinct tonal variations with a single button press.
The unit also includes a meter mode switch with three options: VU, VU/Peak, and Energy. The true bypass function ensures the signal path is completely unaffected when bypassed, by shorting the input directly to the output without any intervening circuitry.
