The Denon DTR-2000 is a rotary head digital audio tape deck released in 1992. It was Denon’s full-size home DAT recorder and was positioned as a high-grade digital recorder with extensive digital audio handling, fast tape access and Denon’s digital conversion technology. The standard Denon DTR-2000 was finished in black, while the Denon DTR-2000G version was finished in gold.
The Denon DTR-2000 used the R-DAT format with a rotary head system and a tape speed of 8.15mm/s. It supported the three main DAT sampling frequencies of 32kHz, 44.1kHz and 48kHz, allowing it to work with standard DAT recording, CD-rate digital material and long-play 32kHz mode. The deck was equipped with amorphous heads and offered recording and playback performance with a frequency response of 2Hz to 22kHz ±0.5dB in standard mode.
For digital connection, the Denon DTR-2000 included both coaxial and optical digital input and output terminals. This allowed digital copying and digital playback connection with compatible equipment. The deck was SCMS compatible, allowing first-generation digital recording from sources such as CD or DAT, while preventing further digital copying from a digitally recorded tape.
The Denon DTR-2000 included digital fade-in and fade-out functions, manual ID writing and erasing, auto renumbering and a fine cue function. The fine cue function allowed accurate ID writing positions to be determined while playing at approximately half normal speed. These functions made the deck more practical for editing, compiling and managing DAT recordings than a basic digital tape recorder.
Fast tape access was another key part of the Denon DTR-2000 design. The deck offered approximately 250 times search speed and approximately 400 times high-speed fast-forward and rewind. For a 120-minute tape, normal fast-forward and rewind was approximately 39 seconds, while high-speed fast-forward and rewind was approximately 27 seconds.
The mechanical construction of the Denon DTR-2000 used an aluminium die-cast mechanism base. The mechanism unit was floated using special damper material, reducing the effect of external vibration on tape travel. This construction was intended to support stable tape handling and accurate rotary head operation.
The Denon DTR-2000 also included a three-stage display brightness control, timer operation support and a supplied wireless remote control. The combination of DAT digital recording, optical and coaxial digital I/O, SCMS support, advanced ID functions and high-speed tape handling made it one of Denon’s most advanced consumer DAT recorders.
