The Electro-Voice RE27N/D is a dynamic cardioid microphone employing a neodymium alloy magnet structure and a reinforced diaphragm dome to deliver higher sensitivity and improved transient response compared with earlier Variable-D designs. The use of a self-generating dynamic transducer provides inherently low noise operation while maintaining the ability to handle high sound pressure levels without distortion. The Electro-Voice RE27N/D achieves a signal-to-noise performance comparable to condenser cardioid microphones while retaining the robustness and reliability of a dynamic design.
Variable-D technology is used to control proximity effect, maintaining a consistent low-frequency response whether the microphone is used close to the source or at a greater distance. The cardioid polar pattern offers strong rejection at 180 degrees off axis, supporting high gain-before-feedback in broadcast and reinforcement environments. A humbucking coil is incorporated to reduce interference from lighting and other electrical sources, and the internal transducer is shock mounted to minimise vibration transfer.
The Electro-Voice RE27N/D includes integral blast, pop, and wind filtering that covers all acoustic openings, allowing close-talk operation without excessive plosives or sibilance. Three recessed slide switches provide passive equalisation options, including two bass roll-off settings and a high-frequency response adjustment, allowing the microphone to be adapted to a range of speech and programme material requirements. The steel body construction and internal protection systems are designed to withstand continuous professional use.
