Eddie Kramer Biography

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1942, Eddie Kramer moved to London in the early 1960s, where he began working at Advision Studios and later Olympic Studios. There he engineered sessions for artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Traffic, and Small Faces. His innovative microphone placement and creative use of tape echo and panning soon earned him a reputation as one of the most forward-thinking engineers of his generation.

In 1966, Kramer met Jimi Hendrix and became his principal recording engineer, capturing every major studio album including Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland. Their partnership redefined studio experimentation, with Kramer using extreme stereo imaging, reverse tape effects, and multitrack layering to create Hendrix’s signature soundscapes.

After Hendrix’s death, Kramer continued to mix and produce posthumous Hendrix releases while expanding his production portfolio to include Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Peter Frampton, Carly Simon, and Joe Cocker. He was also instrumental in the Woodstock Festival recordings, mixing both the film soundtrack and live album.

Kramer later relocated to the United States, where he helped design and oversee the technical layout of Electric Lady Studios, ensuring state-of-the-art acoustic and ergonomic design. Today, he continues to work on remastering classic recordings, producing Hendrix archival releases, and mentoring new generations of engineers.
