AIR Studios London History

AIR Studios London was founded in 1969 by Sir George Martin following his departure from EMI. After years working at Abbey Road Studios, Martin sought to create a studio environment that was artist-focused, flexible, and technically ahead of its time. The first AIR facility opened on Oxford Street, London, in 1970, featuring state-of-the-art custom Neve consoles and cutting-edge recording equipment that quickly attracted top talent.

Throughout the 1970s, AIR Studios became a creative home for artists such as Paul McCartney, Genesis, Elton John, and The Rolling Stones. The studio’s combination of world-class acoustics, innovative engineering, and relaxed atmosphere made it one of the most sought-after recording spaces in the world. In 1991, AIR Studios relocated to Lyndhurst Hall in Hampstead, a magnificent Grade II-listed building originally designed in 1880 as a church. The new facility retained the AIR name and quickly established itself as one of the finest orchestral recording and film-scoring studios in existence.

Over the years, AIR Studios London has hosted sessions for some of the biggest names in film and music, including Hans Zimmer, Adele, Radiohead, and Coldplay. The studio’s technical infrastructure, built around Neve and SSL consoles, combined with its expansive live room and Lyndhurst Hall’s breathtaking natural acoustics, has made it a premier destination for both large-scale orchestral work and contemporary production.
