Secondary Skills: Mixing Engineer, Producer
Active: 1960s – Present
George Massenburg is one of the most respected and forward-thinking recording engineers and producers in the world. Equally recognised for his pioneering technical innovations and his musical sensitivity, George Massenburg has helped shape modern recording through both his engineering work and his invention of the parametric equaliser. Across a career spanning more than five decades, he has worked with artists including Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, Earth, Wind & Fire, Lyle Lovett, and Billy Joel, combining immaculate sonic precision with natural musical feel.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1947, George Massenburg’s fascination with electronics and sound began at an early age. By his early twenties, he was already working in studios and experimenting with circuit design. In 1972, he presented a technical paper at the Audio Engineering Society introducing the world’s first parametric equaliser, a revolutionary concept that allowed full control over frequency, bandwidth, and gain. This invention quickly became a standard in professional recording, used in virtually every studio and mixing console since.
Massenburg’s recording career blossomed in the 1970s through his work with Little Feat and Linda Ronstadt, where his mixes were praised for their clarity, transparency, and dynamic realism. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he continued producing and engineering for a diverse range of artists, including Aaron Neville, Lyle Lovett, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, earning multiple Grammy Awards for his work.
Beyond his achievements as an engineer and producer, Massenburg founded George Massenburg Labs (GML), producing some of the most revered analogue signal processors and microphone preamps in the industry. His contributions extend to studio design and education, he has been deeply involved with the Recording Arts and Sciences program at McGill University in Montreal and continues to mentor new generations of engineers.
