Blackbird Studio Nashville is one of the most advanced and respected recording facilities in the world. Founded in 2002 by recording engineer and producer John McBride, it has become synonymous with technical excellence, acoustic perfection, and an artist-first philosophy. The studio combines a vast collection of rare analogue equipment with cutting-edge digital technology, offering one of the most comprehensive recording environments ever built. Over the past two decades, Blackbird Studio has hosted leading artists including Taylor Swift, Kings of Leon, Metallica, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, and Jack White, earning its reputation as Nashville’s premier destination for world-class recording and mixing.
John McBride established Blackbird Studio with the goal of creating the ultimate recording environment, where no creative or technical limitation would stand in the way of great music. What began as a single room designed for his wife, country artist Martina McBride, rapidly expanded into a multi-room complex known for its impeccable acoustics and unrivalled gear collection.
Each of Blackbird’s eight studios was purpose-built to serve specific sonic needs. From the massive live room of Studio A, designed for full orchestral or rock sessions, to the intimate ambience of Studio C for vocals and overdubs, every space was crafted with acoustic precision. Legendary designer George Massenburg contributed to the technical layout and acoustics, ensuring the highest possible fidelity and flexibility.
By the mid-2000s, Blackbird had become a magnet for major artists and producers, offering access to both vintage analogue signal chains and state-of-the-art digital workflows. Its collection of over 2,000 microphones, dozens of classic consoles, and fully maintained outboard processors made it a one-of-a-kind facility. In addition to recording and mixing services, Blackbird expanded into education with the launch of The Blackbird Academy in 2013, training the next generation of engineers and producers using the same world-class gear and environment that define the studio.
