Looptrotter SATurAMP Saturator Details

The Looptrotter SATurAMP is a unique microphone and instrument preamplifier housed in the 500 series format, combining a high-quality discrete class A preamp with Looptrotter’s renowned solid-state saturation circuit. This hybrid design makes it a versatile and creative tool capable of delivering powerful, detailed, and musical recordings with an authentic analogue character.

At its input stage, the Looptrotter SATurAMP employs a SOWTER transformer modelled on the classic AP2620 found in legendary API preamps. It features 48V phantom power, phase invert, and a -20dB pad which switches the input mode from mic to line. The discrete class A operational amplifier design draws inspiration from early 1960s circuits, while gain adjustment is digitally controlled in 1dB steps via micro buttons, with values clearly displayed on a digital readout.

For additional control, Looptrotter SATurAMP includes three selectable high-pass filters with 12dB/octave slopes: 60Hz Chebychev, 100Hz Butterworth, and 160Hz Bessel. The saturation circuit, inspired by vintage tape machines and analogue consoles, smooths peaks, introduces low-order harmonics, and functions as a soft limiter, enabling higher RMS levels without distortion. LEDs indicate harmonic saturation at 4% and 8% THD, while a signal peak LED provides visual monitoring. A rare feature for a 500 series module, the MUTE function allows instant muting of the output for efficient workflow.

The output section provides precise level adjustment, and the Hi-Z instrument input is built on discrete transistors operating in class A. The inclusion of a FET transistor adds subtle even harmonics, enriching guitars, bass, and synthesisers with warmth and an analogue feel. With its blend of precise modern control and classic analogue tone, the Looptrotter SATurAMP stands out as both a universal and creative recording solution.
