The Manley Reference Silver delivers large-diaphragm tube microphone performance inspired by the classic Sony C-37A, pairing an American-made Josephson capsule with Manley’s valve amplifier design. Hand-built in California, the microphone is intended for applications where warmth, dimensional imaging, and cohesive midrange tonality are prioritised over analytical precision.
The capsule design reflects vintage C-37A characteristics, producing a rounded midrange with controlled high-frequency response that avoids sibilance and resonant artefacts. This voicing is well suited to female vocals, saxophones, and ensemble sources, while also proving effective as a drum overhead microphone where cymbal transients must remain controlled.
The Manley Reference Silver provides mechanically switchable cardioid and omnidirectional polar patterns via a rear-mounted selector on the head basket, allowing adaptation between proximity-focused capture and open, room-inclusive recording. The internal all-tube head amplifier employs a 5670 vacuum tube operating at elevated voltage for extended headroom and low noise performance.
Signal output is delivered through a hand-wound Manley IRON® nickel-core transformer, providing balanced low-impedance output. A custom-designed switched-mode outboard power supply supports universal mains operation and enables a maximum sound pressure level of 150 dB at the capsule. Each microphone is hand-assembled and tested at Manley Laboratories in California, combining vintage-inspired voicing with modern reliability for professional studio use.
