Mutec MC4 Multichannel Format and Sampling Rate Converter

Mutec MC4
The Mutec MC4 is a high-performance digital multichannel audio converter for ADAT, AES3 and S/P-DIF, offering bidirectional conversion up to 192 kHz. It features a 16-channel SRC engine, X-SRC mode for real-time synchronisation of asynchronous sources, and ultra low-jitter internal clocking for unmatched flexibility and precision.

Mutec MC4 Multichannel Format and Sampling Rate Converter Details

The Mutec MC4 is a professional digital multichannel audio converter capable of handling ADAT, AES3 and S/P-DIF signals in both unidirectional and bidirectional modes. It supports sample rates up to 192.0 kHz and includes SMUX2 and SMUX4 compatibility, enabling ADAT conversions at higher clock rates than 48.0 kHz. Built on the latest FPGA technology, the Mutec MC4 delivers exceptional signal integrity, clocking precision and operational versatility that set it apart from other devices in its class.

Its broad range of operating modes allows the Mutec MC4 to be used across a wide variety of applications. Typically, incoming digital audio signals are simultaneously converted into all three supported formats, either with or without the use of its sampling rate conversion (SRC) engine. When conversion between clock rates is required, the SRC can be locked to Word Clock, AES11 via a dedicated input, or any of the digital inputs, in both unidirectional and bidirectional configurations.

What makes the Mutec MC4 particularly unique is its ability to synchronise two separate 8-channel digital audio sources running at different clock rates. Using its exclusive X-SRC mode, the Mutec MC4 converts their audio formats and synchronises their clock domains in real time. This is achieved through an integrated 16-channel SRC engine and a pair of audiophile-grade PLL synthesizers that ensure exceptional audio quality in every operating mode.

The Mutec MC4 extracts the master clock from each of the two incoming digital audio streams and uses these as references to drive the SRCs assigned to their respective outputs. This design allows the two sources to remain locked to one another without needing to rely on an external master clock. This is especially valuable when connecting two digital devices that cannot be externally synchronised, each running on its own internal clock.

In addition, the Mutec MC4 includes an ultra low-jitter internal clock of outstanding accuracy. If no external reference is available, the SRCs can be locked to this internal source, and the unit’s Word Clock output can then be used to synchronise other devices within the studio system.

With these capabilities, the Mutec MC4 stands out as one of the most powerful and adaptable digital multichannel audio converters available for professional audio environments.
