The Ocean Way Audio HR5 is a compact two way, bi-amped reference monitor developed specifically for home and project studio environments, delivering performance characteristics derived directly from the monitoring systems used throughout Ocean Way Recording.
Central to the design is a perfectly controlled 100 degree horizontal dispersion pattern, ensuring that the tonal balance and imaging remain consistent regardless of listening position. This wide and uniform dispersion creates an exceptionally large sweet spot, allowing accurate monitoring not only from the primary listening position but also across the room, with the same balance and clarity preserved for multiple listeners.
This distinctive dispersion behaviour is rooted in Ocean Way Audio’s patented constant directivity horn technology, applied to both the high frequency and low frequency bands. These horns are milled from solid blocks of wood, rendering them completely non-resonant while delivering higher efficiency than conventional direct radiating designs. As a result, both frequency bands operate with significantly reduced strain, even at elevated playback levels, leading to very low distortion and a natural, uncoloured presentation. Despite the use of horn loading, the HR5 avoids any traditional horn character, instead presenting a smooth and coherent sound that remains free from harshness.
The high frequency section of the Ocean Way Audio HR5 employs a 1 inch silk dome driver with an aluminium voice coil and a large magnetic structure. Unlike conventional horn drivers, this design requires no phasing plug, contributing to substantially lower distortion. The high frequency driver is powered by a dedicated 90 watt amplifier and is capable of producing exceptionally high output with minimal input power.
The low frequency section features a high performance 7 inch woofer with a very light cone and aluminium voice coil, optimised for clarity and speed while maintaining impressive bass extension. The rear-ported cabinet design extends the effective bass wavelength, allowing the HR5 to deliver clear, defined low frequency response down to 45Hz and below, a notable achievement for a monitor of this size.
A critical aspect of the Ocean Way Audio HR5 is the precise physical time alignment between the high and low frequency components, combined with identical horn flare rates. This ensures an inaudible transition through the crossover region, producing a seamless and unified sound that behaves as a single coherent source.
Each Ocean Way Audio HR5 monitor is matched to within ±1dB across its entire extended frequency range, providing exceptional stereo imaging and allowing confident placement and level balancing of every element within a mix. This level of consistency ensures reliable translation across playback systems, reinforcing the HR5 as a serious reference tool despite its compact footprint.
