The Panasonic SV-3500 Digital Audio Tape Deck is a professional DAT recorder designed to deliver high quality digital recording and playback within a compact cassette-based format. Developed for professional applications, the Panasonic SV-3500 combines advanced rotary head technology with digital audio processing to provide full recording and playback capability comparable to traditional cassette systems, while significantly extending recording duration. A single DAT cassette can store up to two hours of music, offering extended operational efficiency alongside direct access, skip, and programmable playback functions.
The Panasonic SV-3500 integrates indexing signals alongside audio data, allowing for precise navigation and rapid location of programme material, supported by automatic search and playback control functions. Panasonic’s expertise in video head technology is applied to the rotary head system, ensuring precision recording and stable playback performance.
The Panasonic SV-3500 employs a diecast cylinder base with an amorphous head construction, increasing saturation flux density and extending frequency response through the use of high coercivity metal tape. This design ensures reliable, high fidelity recording with improved signal integrity. The inclusion of 18-bit analogue to digital and digital to analogue conversion systems enhances overall audio performance by reducing conversion error and improving linearity.
During recording, the dual ADC system reduces conversion error by a significant margin, while maintaining low distortion. Playback is handled by a four DAC configuration, with two converters assigned per channel, increasing resolution and minimising zero-cross distortion through a bit shift system. The result is accurate digital audio reproduction with stable performance across the signal chain.
Class AA amplifier circuitry is incorporated within the Panasonic SV-3500 to ensure accurate transfer of digital data, improving voltage control within both ADC and DAC stages. This contributes to overall system stability and consistency while maintaining signal integrity throughout the recording and playback process. The system also includes a comprehensive indexing function, allowing absolute time and programme number data to be recorded automatically. Additional markers such as skip ID and start ID can be manually added or deleted, enabling precise control over playback sequences. Once indexed, the unit can automatically renumber tracks and maintain consistent timing during playback operations.
Operational flexibility is a key aspect of the Panasonic SV-3500. The unit supports multiple sampling frequencies, including 48kHz and 32kHz for recording and playback, with 44.1kHz available for playback compatibility. Balanced XLR analogue inputs and outputs are provided alongside coaxial digital connections, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of professional audio systems.
A wired remote control unit is included, enabling transport control functions such as stop, play, record, pause, rewind, fast forward, and skip. Additional features include a wide range digital direct response level meter with peak hold, selectable counter display modes, track number display, high speed search functionality, and slow speed playback for detailed monitoring.
The Panasonic SV-3500 also incorporates practical features for professional environments, including end search functionality, multi repeat playback, auto rec mute, balance and recording level control, and a headphone output with independent level adjustment. The transport system utilises a CRV digital servo mechanism, enabling tape winding speeds of up to 200 times normal playback speed. During playback, variable speed control allows operation at reduced speeds between approximately one third and one tenth of normal playback speed, supporting detailed audio inspection and editing workflows.
