Smart Research C2 Compressor Details

The Smart Research C2 Compressor is designed as a highly versatile dynamics processor that builds on the capabilities of the earlier C1 while adding greater control, faster response, and expanded creative options. The unit contains two independent mono compressors, and when switched to stereo mode the left hand controls operate both channels to provide true stereo performance, with the right hand controls unused. Variants in the Smart Research C2 Compressor Family offer different configurations to suit a wide range of studio applications.

The Smart Research C2M provides a single set of controls for stereo use, while retaining two audio channels with simplified operation. The Smart Research C2R functions as a dual channel remote expander that allows systems of up to eight channels to be built and controlled from a single Smart Research C2 or C2M, making it well suited to multi channel and surround workflows.

The sound character of the Smart Research C2 Compressor is defined by its extremely fast response at the onset of gain reduction. By delaying the point where compression takes hold to the mid range attack settings between 0.3 and 3 milliseconds, a small window opens that allows transient information to pass through before compression begins. When the C2 is used across a full mix or with any dynamic programme material, this behaviour adds noticeable punch as the sidechain breathes around the transient information while retaining control over overall levels.

CRUSH mode extends this musicality by exaggerating the timing, harmonic, and frequency response factors that shape the compressor’s tone. Although CRUSH mode can produce highly pronounced compression effects, when combined with the newly introduced fast limit settings it allows the C2 to cover a broader creative range than the C1, from subtle shaping to aggressive rhythmic effects.

The Smart Research C2 Compressor provides fast attack and limit settings that allow for protective limiting in demanding applications such as broadcast and live sound. External sidechain inputs are available for techniques such as ducking, and the unit includes power fail bypass to ensure continuity in critical environments. The control set includes ratios of 1.5:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 10:1 and Limit, attack times of 0, 0.1, 0.3, 1, 3, 10 and 30 milliseconds, and release times of 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 seconds. Optional external fader level control inputs can be ordered for stereo mastering and related applications, and additional dual channel slave units can be added for multichannel systems used in film or surround work.

Smart Research also offers high pass sidechain filter cables that reduce low frequency sensitivity during compression. These cables split the input signal through a 150Hz high pass filter at 6dB per octave before feeding the external sidechain input. The Smart Research C2 behaves normally until the external sidechain switch is selected, and external sources can still be used with or without the filters. These cables are priced at UK£65 per pair.

Internally, the Smart Research C2 Compressor employs a new generation of Voltage Controlled Amplifiers, high slew rate amplifiers with hybrid FET and transistor inputs, and high current push pull transistor outputs. The circuit is designed with full signal path symmetry, balanced inputs and outputs, and avoids electrolytic capacitors in the main signal path. This produces a clean, stable, and consistent response suitable for a wide range of studio environments. The Smart Research C2 Compressor Family shares consistent specifications that allow it to be integrated easily into modern studio systems, with wide frequency response, low noise, low distortion, and high headroom performance.
