Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic Compressor

Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic
The Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic is a 1U rackmount stereo analogue bus compressor that recreates the architecture and characteristic response of the legendary SSL Stereo Bus Compressor. Featuring THAT 2181 VCAs, Variable VCA Drive, expanded compression ratios and time constants, SSL Auto Release, an integrated side-chain high-pass filter and genuine stereo external side-chain inputs, it combines the familiar operation of the original design with additional control over dynamics, harmonic character and stereo bus processing.

Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic Compressor Details

The Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic continues the heritage of the SSL Stereo Bus Compressor, a dynamics processor closely associated with the company’s large-format recording consoles and professional mixing workflows. Designed around the fundamental principles of the original compressor, the Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic retains the distinctive SSL side-chain architecture while introducing additional facilities that extend its use beyond conventional stereo mix bus compression.

At the centre of the Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic are high-performance THAT 2181 voltage-controlled amplifiers (VCAs), combined with SSL’s established feedback side-chain architecture, which incorporates a VCA within the detector feedback loop. This arrangement produces the compression characteristics associated with the original SSL design, allowing multiple signals to respond collectively to changes in programme dynamics. The compressor can provide subtle overall gain reduction or more pronounced dynamic control for instrument groups, drum buses and stereo mixes.

One of the most significant additions is Variable VCA Drive, which allows the harmonic characteristics of the compressor to be adjusted independently of its conventional compression controls. With VCA Drive disabled, the VCAs operate in a balanced configuration associated with the low-distortion SuperAnalogue technology used in SSL’s 9000 Series and Duality consoles. This configuration provides a clean signal path with low harmonic distortion and precise transient handling.

Activating Variable VCA Drive changes the VCA operation to an unbalanced configuration, recreating aspects of the harmonic behaviour associated with earlier SSL equipment, including the FX384 and 4000 Series consoles. Increasing the Drive control progressively introduces additional harmonic distortion and saturation, allowing the processor to move between comparatively transparent compression and the more heavily coloured characteristics of early SSL designs. At higher settings, VCA Drive can approach 10% total harmonic distortion, providing additional possibilities for drum processing, parallel compression and creative bus treatments.

The Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic retains the familiar SSL compression controls, with precision six-position stepped switches for Ratio, Attack and Release. These controls provide repeatable settings and straightforward recall while preserving the operational approach of the original bus compressor. Additional ratio and release settings expand the available compression characteristics, allowing the processor to accommodate a wider variety of programme material.

The compressor’s 2:1 ratio uses a particularly gentle soft-knee characteristic, allowing gain reduction to increase progressively as the signal exceeds the threshold. Higher compression ratios provide more assertive dynamic control, making the unit suitable for individual instrument buses, percussion groups and more intensive parallel processing applications.

SSL’s Auto Release mode provides programme-dependent recovery through a two-stage release circuit. Rather than applying a single fixed recovery time, the circuit responds to the dynamics of the incoming material, allowing louder signal components to recover more quickly while quieter elements recover more gradually. This behaviour helps maintain the natural movement of complex programme material while controlling overall dynamics.

The integrated side-chain high-pass filter provides additional control over how low-frequency information influences compression. Its precision six-position stepped control allows the detector’s response to bass-heavy material to be adjusted, reducing the tendency for kick drums and bass instruments to trigger excessive gain reduction across the entire stereo signal. This is particularly useful when processing complete mixes or instrument groups containing substantial low-frequency energy.

A genuine stereo external side-chain input further extends the compressor’s applications. External signals can control the gain-reduction behaviour independently of the audio passing through the main signal path, supporting creative compression techniques and more specialised mixing workflows.

One application involves processing individual stems while using the complete stereo mix as the external side-chain source. By feeding the original mix into the detector while processing each stem separately, the compressor can reproduce the gain-reduction behaviour experienced by those elements within the complete production. This approach helps maintain consistent dynamics when preparing alternate mixes, instrumental versions and other stem-based deliverables.

The Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic provides balanced stereo analogue connections through rear-panel XLR connectors. Two female XLR connectors accommodate the main stereo input, two male XLR connectors provide the stereo output, and a further pair of female XLR connectors accepts the external stereo side-chain signal. All connections use pin 2 hot, pin 3 cold and pin 1 chassis.

Audio performance includes a maximum input and output level of +27.5dBu, a dynamic range of 126dB when bypassed and 122dB with compression engaged. Frequency response extends beyond 200kHz at the upper -3dB point, while stereo matching is specified at better than 0.05dB in both bypassed and compressor-engaged operation. These characteristics reflect the combination of classic analogue compressor architecture and modern precision components.

Housed in a 1U rackmount chassis, the Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic incorporates an auto-ranging 100–240V AC power supply and consumes 12W during operation. Its dedicated hardware controls, extended compression facilities and selectable VCA operating characteristics make it suitable for stereo mix processing, group compression, parallel dynamics and stem-based production workflows.
