The TASCAM 488 Portastudio is an eight-track, eight-channel rackmount recording system that brings professional multitrack capability to both traditional instrument and MIDI-based electronic music setups. The mixer section provides twelve inputs (eight mono channels with trim on channels 1–2, line-level on channels 3–12 and two stereo auxiliaries), four group busses, high- and low-frequency equalisation and two effect sends on every mono channel.
Channels 5–8 of the TASCAM 488 can bypass the mixer entirely for direct cue feeds, and the Tape Mix function lets you blend twelve live sources with your recorded tracks. The recorder section of the TASCAM 488 offers simultaneous four-track recording at a 9.5 cm/s tape speed, logic-controlled transport, built-in dbx noise reduction with on/off switching, ± 12 % pitch control, three auto-locate points (Zero, Memo 1 and Memo 2) with repeat functions and manual punch-in/rehearsal.
Sync in/out jacks on the TASCAM 488 allow for external timing integration, while a comprehensive LCD displays ten level meters and a tape counter. The system measures 490 mm x 125 mm x 392 mm, weighs 7 kg and accepts the optional RC-30P remote footswitch for hands-free punch-in/out control.
