The TASCAM MMP-16 Modular Multitrack Player was designed as a professional digital playback system for post-production facilities working with complex film and video sound projects. Rather than operating as a conventional recorder, the TASCAM MMP-16 focused on reliable, synchronised, 16-channel playback from hard disk, with the ability to mount and play projects created on major workstation systems. TASCAM presented the MMP-16 as a tapeless system able to do the work of Mag film dubbers and multitrack tape machines, while also offering the advantages of random access removable media.
A central feature of the TASCAM MMP-16 was its multi-format, cross-platform architecture. The system could work with material from Macintosh and PC-based workstation systems, including Digidesign Pro Tools session files, OMF, Sound Designer II, WaveFrame, StudioFrame, Broadcast WAV, and other digital media formats. This allowed edited workstation media to be mounted directly in the MMP-16 for playback, reducing the need for costly transfers to tape or other formats before reaching the mixing stage.
The TASCAM MMP-16 offered sixteen channels of synchronised digital audio playback and could play multiple audio file formats from up to seven drives simultaneously. The system supported an internal drive and up to six external SCSI drives, allowing projects from different sources to be mounted and played in their native form. The removable hard drive carrier used a Kingston carrier system, while the front panel also included a 3.5-inch floppy drive for software updates and saving user settings.
The MMP-16 was designed to look and behave like a conventional multitrack machine from the operator’s perspective. Its front panel included transport controls, a jog/shuttle wheel, track keys, audio meters, status LEDs, and a 2-line LCD display. Basic editing functions including Cut, Copy, Clear, Paste, Insert, Open, Undo, and Redo were available directly from the front panel, with ten levels of undo and redo. Tracks, regions, or events could also be slipped, with offset adjustment available from numeric entry or the jog/shuttle wheel.
Synchronisation was one of the TASCAM MMP-16’s defining features. The unit included a full-featured multi-machine synchroniser and could send and receive a wide range of sync and transport control signals. It supported LTC, VITC, Biphase, word clock, digital audio sync, video reference, MMR Bus, and Lynx Bus operation. With Biphase chase inputs and outputs, the MMP-16 could emulate the behaviour of commercial Mag film dubbers, including inching or scrubbing sound in either direction under control of a film projector or video tape machine.
The MMP-16 could operate in multiple modes, including Local/Bus, TC Chase, Biphase Chase, Biphase Transport, Serial Transport, Editor, and Varispeed. It could chase and synchronise to time code from LTC, VITC, or serial editor control, chase Biphase from one of four inputs, control a Biphase transport, control a serial deck through Sony P-2 protocol, or be completely controlled by an external video editor or non-Lynx synchroniser.
For larger post-production installations, the TASCAM MMP-16 supported extensive multi-machine control. The MMR Bus could link up to 100 MMP-16 units, with four independent Sync Groups allowing different control rooms to be assigned to machines within the same system. The brochure states this could provide up to 1600 tracks of playback when using 100 MMP-16 units. The Lynx Bus allowed direct connection to the TimeLine Lynx Keyboard Control Unit, enabling control of transport, slip, and edit functions across up to six MMP-16 units for 96-track playback.
Audio quality was based around internal 24-bit resolution and 20-bit output conversion. The system supported 16-bit and 24-bit playback, with sampling rates of 44.1kHz and 48kHz plus pull-up and pull-down variations for film and video work. The supported sample-rate options covered NTSC, PAL, 24-frame, 25-frame, pull-up, pull-down, and film-to-video conversion requirements. Audio output was available as 16 balanced analogue outputs with 20-bit conversion and 16 channels of AES/EBU digital output, both using DA-88-style connector formats.
The TASCAM MMP-16 was also designed for practical integration into existing professional environments. The use of DA-88-style connectors meant it could use the same cabling as TASCAM’s DA-88 system, simplifying installation for facilities already using TASCAM digital multitrack hardware. Rear panel connections included analogue outputs, AES/EBU digital outputs, SCSI, RS-232, Biphase, MMR Bus, word clock, video loop-through, MIDI In/Out/Thru, VITC, LTC, Lynx bus, RS-422 editor control, RS-422 transport control, and parallel transport control.
The optional MM-RC remote control expanded operation by providing external control over multiple MMR-8 and MMP-16 units with full front panel functionality. Multiple remotes could be connected in parallel across a group of machines, and a PC-AT style keyboard could be attached to the MM-RC for easier naming of projects and tracks.
The TASCAM MMP-16 was not a general-purpose studio recorder in the traditional sense. It was a specialised post-production playback and dubbing system created for environments where large numbers of synchronised digital tracks, workstation compatibility, removable media, and machine-room style control were more important than conventional recording functions. Its design reflects a transitional period in professional audio, when film and video post-production was moving from tape and Mag film workflows into disk-based, workstation-linked digital dubbing systems.
