Tonelux Equalux Stereo Parametric Equaliser Details

The Tonelux Equalux, introduced at AES in late 2008, is a discrete 4-band parametric equaliser that combines modern engineering with design concepts inspired by classic analogue EQs. Its most distinctive feature is the lack of a traditional Q control. Instead, the Tonelux Equalux employs a “Constant Energy Curve,” more widely known as Proportional Q, which naturally adjusts the bandwidth in relation to the amount of boost or cut applied.

This approach keeps the bandwidth broad at subtle adjustments and progressively narrows it with more extreme boosts or cuts, creating results that are both musical and intuitive. When additional precision is required, engaging the PEAK button on each band sets the filter width to a constant one-third octave.

The Tonelux Equalux offers further flexibility with both high and low shelving options, in addition to peak filters across all four bands. The lowest band can extend down to 18 Hz for deep low-end shaping, while the upper bands provide identical ranges for detailed control in the mid and high frequencies.

A silent IN/OUT switch allows users to bypass the filters without removing the unit from the signal chain, and, like other Tonelux modules, its button pulsates with signal presence, which can be configured to monitor either the EQ input or post-EQ output. A separate BYPASS switch provides a hardwire bypass, ensuring signal integrity even in the event of a power failure.

On the rear panel, the Tonelux Equalux includes a balanced XLR input and output, both at +4 dBu nominal level, with an additional 1/4-inch input jack featuring a -6 dB pad for sources operating at +10 dBu. Built around the celebrated Tonelux discrete op-amp and transformer circuitry, the Tonelux Equalux delivers the smooth, musical tone of revered vintage equalisers while introducing modern workflow refinements that made it a standout in the late 2000s era of hybrid studio design.

Features

  • Discrete 4-band parametric EQ: Proportional Q design for natural musical response
  • Constant Energy Curve: bandwidth widens at subtle boosts/cuts, narrows at extreme settings
  • PEAK mode: constant 1/3-octave bandwidth for precision control
  • Shelving options: selectable high and low shelving filters
  • Extended frequency range: lower band reaches down to 18 Hz
  • Silent IN/OUT switch: bypasses filters while keeping unit in the signal path
  • Signal presence indicator: pulsating IN button configurable for input or post-EQ output
  • Hardwire BYPASS switch: ensures signal continuity in case of power failure
  • Rear panel I/O: XLR input/output and 1/4-inch input with pad
